The Oakwood Eatery Killearn Stirlingshire

Had a trip yesterday to the Oakwood Garden Centre near Killearn Village, a short drive from Glasgow. This has been around for a few years now and is very popular for lunch and coffee. We know this as we had to queue for 10 minutes for a table! It is definately a cut above the usual garden centre cafes.
LOCATION
The most amazing views of the Campsies and a bright and spacious area within the garden centre but the window tables are always the first to go. However, if you phone first thing in the morning you can book one! Will remember to do that next time!
FOOD
We had a selection of teas, Tetley, Twinings Speciality and Thomson's Coffee, all very nice. Scones were good but a bit crispy on the outside. The rest of the baking looked lovely, lots of sponge cakes, Coffee, Chocolate and Victoria and Empire Biscuits, Caramel Shortcake, fruit scones and tray bakes. Will try on next visit.
Lunch looked so good we decided to indulge. There was a choice of three soups, Ploughman's platter, fab sandwiches and a selection of hot dishes.
AMENITIES
Light and spacious with easy access for buggies or wheelchairs. Toilets were very designer, clean and modern. Easy car parking outside the garden centre. The centre itself had a good selection of gifts, cards, gardening tools and plants. The village of Killearn is 5 minutes drive away with a good gallery, gift shops an excellent pharmacist and other local shops. Well worth a walk around. Whisky tours available at Glengoyne Distillery nearby and some nice walks.
SERVICE
Staff were helpful and polite.
VERDICT
Great place for tea or lunch. Really outstanding views and well worth a drive to find it.

  1. If there is one thing they cannot impress me with and that is the Ploughmans platter. Two lumps of smoked soft cheese and enough lettuce to feed a rabbit for 6 months garnished with a slice of ham&egg slice ... ugh!
And for the coffee, it had been around a while and tasted like tar in a cup that thankfully could only contain five mouthfulls at the most.
Has management changed since the last time I visited this establishment?

  2. Enjoyed afternoon lunch there with my mum and toddler yesterday. We were out for a drive and came upon it by accident. It's very popular with locals and there were only a handful of tables free. Lovely view of the Campsie Fells.
We had soup and sandwiches which were really tasty.
I am pretty confident my mum will be taking my dad there next.

  3. To Laurance Scott..Maybe you should come back to Oakwood for a Ploughmans lunch and remember to wear your glasses as it is one of the most popular requests from the menu and A Picture On A Plate !!!!

  4. Went to Oakwood on Friday 20th. The food was great and the staff were excellent. The manager takes time to talk to all the customers old and new(we are) even although it was extremely busy and she was run off her feet. The ploughmans is the best my Husband has had anywhere and the seafood salad was excellent. The views are magnificent. WELL DONE OAKWOOD. We will be back.

  6. In all honesty the staff are great in the resteraunt. But goodness, the actual garden centre staff. Some dear followed our children round the shop expecting trouble! Dreadful. Dont allow children, dont have a childrens section. You cant have it both ways. It really soured my experience

  7. I was quite taken by old Jean and her hipster style blue cords! Special!
A smile or two from her from time to time may brighten the place up a little!

  8. Oakwood...What has happened to you...Where is your lovely manager who always had a smile and time to talk to old and new customers....On asking staff we were told Catherine had left a few months ago.... Well I say bring her back, there is no atmosphere and the new manager doesn't have the warm friendly smile that we expect on our visits when here to see family. Please smile and chat with us..

  10. Well I've been to Oakwood three times for lunch and think it's terrific, lovely warm atmosphere, quick service, delicious food, generous portions of everything we ordered. Lovely location, light and airy feel, my place of choice for soup and a sandwich plus yummy desserts.
